A happy hello from Keifer! I am a two-year-old (going on six months!) boy who came all the way from China for another chance at life. And I warn you…I am all puppy! I love to run and play…oh…and to jump and grab. The world belongs to me and whatever you have that I can put in my mouth.

What’s special about me? Homeward Bound quickly noticed that sometimes, when I get over excited, I can momentarily fall down. The heart doc checked me out and the news was not great. I have a congenital heart defect called double chambered right ventricle. What does that mean? When I overdo things, my heart has a hard time keeping up. What does it mean long-term? Probably a shortened life. But here’s the thing…I still want to live every day of it! I would rather live a rich life with sensible limits than stay locked up (and nutty!) for the rest of my days. I am way to young for that. If you’re the kind of person that gets that…read on.

Let’s repeat the part about puppy-like. I need training. Lots of it. I am very capable of learning, but like any puppy, I need consistency and boundaries…and it helps if you stuff a toy in my mouth to begin! I don’t need people that feel sorry for me and spoil me. I want to learn how to be a good canine citizen. I need sturdy people because I am bouncy. And I need people with strong hearts who understand that life is for living and it’s not the number of days we have, but the quality of our time here together that matters.

We can train together, we can go on walks together, we can play together, we can snuggle together. I will learn through experience what is too much and as I mature a bit, I should  learn how to self-regulate. I can’t tell you what “shortened” means. None of us come with an expiration tag. Hopefully, with good care, it can be years but no guarantees.

I can also tell you that I can be in Homeward Bound’s Permanent Foster Program. That means that if you live within 50 miles, Homeward Bound will take care of my medical care for life – you just provide the love (and training…don’t forget the training!).

If you are the special person I have been seeking, just ask for Keifer. I’m a keeper!!
