Tanner spent the last year by his person’s side through his cancer journey. Now his person’s final wish for Tanner is to know that he has found a home. This gentle boy has excellent house manners, a love of swimming, and a truly loyal heart. He’s looking for people willing to make him their one and only…because he has earned it.

Hi, I’m Tanner! I’m a nine-year-old Lab boy with a big, loyal heart. I spent years happily settled in with a wonderful dad and his teenage son. But last year, my dad got this thing called cancer. I stayed right by his side every day. Now, my dad’s cancer journey is coming to an end. He asked Homeward Bound to help me find my next family. It’s a lot to say goodbye to someone I loved so much, but I’m ready to open my heart again.

I’ve gotten a little chunkier since I was here last, and I could use some help working it off with easy daily walks and maybe swims (I love to swim!). Some things about me haven’t changed a bit though: I still love a good baby pool. I know a long list of commands (sit, down, stay, come, leave it, drop it) and I am VERY eager to please, especially if there’s a treat involved (the people here say I have to say ‘hold the treats!’ for now). I have great recall too, so a long line at the park and I are a great match. I’m not much of a guard dog. New people, delivery trucks, knocks at the door… none of it phases me, and I’m just as happy to make friends in a house full of people as I am to be curled up at your feet during a quiet workday.

I do have some opinions about other dogs. On walks I can get worked up and bark or pull if one gets too close, though I settle right down with some space and a little redirection from someone who knows how to manage dog like me. Because of that (and because I used to be a hunting dog with a taste for the chase), I really do best as the one and only pet in the house. No cats, no canine roommates, just me and you. Kids are great with me, especially the sturdy 10+ crowd who can keep pace with me on our walks.

After the year I’ve had, I think I’ve earned a little spoiling, don’t you think? I’m looking for dog-experienced people who’ll be patient with my couple of quirks and give me the calm, permanent home I deserve at this stage of my life.
