Golden Touch – A Senior-to-Senior Connection

Homeward Bound established the “Golden Touch: A Senior-to-Senior Connection” program to match our “Golden Oldies” with retired persons and couples who are at least 60 years of age, not working, and on a limited income. We believe that a retired person can devote more time to these dogs – walking, brushing, petting, and loving them. Dogs make wonderful companions. If you have been considering adding a dog to your family, Homeward Bound may be able to assist you in acquiring a new companion.

Our dogs come in a variety of sizes and colors, all with that innate desire to please their caregivers. Unfortunately, a lot of people want a puppy or young dog, and many of our dogs needing homes are older (ages 11 and up). We call them our “Golden Oldies.” These dogs just want a warm, loving home to share in their senior years.

If you are interested in adopting a “Golden Oldie,” Homeward Bound will help you select the best dog for you. You will be matched with a Homeward Bound volunteer who will be available to answer your questions, facilitate visits to the vet, and be a new friend to help you become a great caregiver. There is no adoption fee for this program.

We realize that many retired persons are on fixed incomes that may make it financially difficult to care for an older dog. Homeward Bound will provide life-long medical care including needed medications, vaccinations, monthly heartworm and flea control. You must live in our area and able to come to see our volunteer vet at Homeward Bound. All we ask of you is to ensure that the dog receives quality food, an indoor sleeping area – and lots of love and tennis balls!

If you are interested in our Golden Touch Program, please give us a call at (916) 655-1410. This is an all-volunteer program, so it may take a day or so for one of us to return your call. Don’t get discouraged; we will get back to you as soon as we can. Thank you for considering our Golden Touch program. We look forward to working with you.

A Poem for The Precious Golden Oldies~ by Donna Walters 7/14/03

With still so many sunrises and sunsets yet to enjoy;
Would love to spend them with you, my tennis ball and maybe a favorite toy.
You know...someone no longer wanted me, and decided to just give me up;
Was it because I was no longer a fuzzy, yellow pup?
I'm so proud to be a precious Golden Oldie, and that fact is very true;
With so much love yet to give...can I spend my "golden" years with you?
It would be heavenly to rest my head upon your lap, with your arms enfolding me;
And once again feel safe and loved, with us just sitting under a majestic, old tree.
I've come such a long way...and my journey has been extremely hard;
Would love to just sit by your side, or peacefully roam around in the yard.
So won't you please adopt me soon, and my "new life's story" can begin to unfold;
For as we all know, there is nothing quite as nice, as precious old gold!
