Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue Mission Statement

Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc. is an all-volunteer organization which rescues and heals displaced, abandoned, and homeless Golden Retrievers and Golden mixes, regardless of their age or health. Homeward Bound secures safe, loving homes through a comprehensive adoption program, and also provides lifetime sanctuary for Goldens that cannot be adopted.

Homeward Bound also provides education on proper animal care and on the benefits of, and need for, rescue and sanctuary. In the event of a disaster, Homeward Bound will provide assistance to other rescue groups and the families of dogs impacted by the disaster.

Homeward Bound will continue to serve as a model rescue organization, addressing animal welfare needs throughout California and neighboring states, and strives to be a national leader in rescue, sanctuary and education.

In support of our Mission Statement, Homeward Bound rescues Golden Retrievers and golden mixes from shelters and from owners who can no longer care for them because of changing circumstances in their lives. We maintain close working relationships with animal shelters in Sacramento, Sutter, Placer, Yolo, El Dorado and surrounding counties, as well as other shelters and rescue organizations throughout California and beyond to ensure that Goldens are relinquished to us. We also rescue Golden Retrievers found wandering the streets or reported to us by concerned neighbors.

Each rescued dog receives a thorough veterinary exam. All of our dogs will be spayed or neutered before an adoption can occur, all vaccinations are brought up to date, and each dog is tested for heartworm. We rescue the old, the sick and injured – as well as the young healthy ones. Some dogs will have significant health issues and it is our responsibility to provide them with expert veterinary care prior to offering them for adoption. Each of our dogs also receive an evaluation that highlights our observations of their temperament and behavior, and may include training recommendations. Volunteers will be working with the dogs in our care to lay a positive foundation of wanted behaviors. Adopters will be apprised of what we know about their new dog’s continuing medical, behavioral, and training needs at the time of adoption.

Homeward Bound is not affiliated with any breed club. Consequently, are able to rescue Golden mixes and golden-hearted dogs as circumstances arise. We are not concerned that our dogs carry AKC papers in their luggage.

Homeward Bound maintains a sanctuary and adoption center in Elverta, CA (near Sacramento). This sanctuary serves as a ‘half-way house’ for dogs awaiting adoption, and as a permanent home for those dogs whose health issues have rendered them unlikely to be adopted. They are welcome to live out their lives at the sanctuary in security and dignity, surrounded by love.
