Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue Mission Statement
Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue & Sanctuary, Inc. is an all-volunteer organization which rescues and heals displaced, abandoned, and homeless Golden Retrievers and Golden mixes, regardless of their age or health. Homeward Bound secures safe, loving homes through a comprehensive adoption program, and also provides lifetime sanctuary for Goldens that cannot be adopted.
Homeward Bound also provides education on proper animal care and on the benefits of, and need for, rescue and sanctuary. In the event of a disaster, Homeward Bound will provide assistance to other rescue groups and the families of dogs impacted by the disaster.
Homeward Bound will continue to serve as a model rescue organization, addressing animal welfare needs throughout California and neighboring states, and strives to be a national leader in rescue, sanctuary and education.
In support of our Mission Statement, Homeward Bound rescues Golden Retrievers from shelters and from owners who can no longer care for them because of changing circumstances in their lives. We maintain close working relationships with animal shelters in Sacramento, Sutter, Placer, Yolo, El Dorado and surrounding counties, as well as other shelters and rescue organizations throughout California and beyond, to ensure that Goldens are relinquished to us instead of being euthanized. We also rescue Golden Retrievers found wandering the streets or reported to us by concerned neighbors. We rescue Goldens of all ages, and Golden mixes.
Each rescued Golden immediately receives a thorough veterinary exam. All of our Goldens will be spayed or neutered before an adoption can occur, all vaccinations are brought up to date, and each Golden is tested for heartworm. We rescue the old, the sick and injured Goldens as well as the young healthy ones. Some of these Goldens will have significant health issues and it is our responsibility to provide them with expert veterinary care prior to offering them for adoption. Each of our dogs will also receive an evaluation that highlights our observations of their temperament and behavior, and training suggestions. Volunteers will be working with the dogs in our care to lay a positive foundation of wanted behaviors. Adopters will be apprised of what we know about their new dog’s continuing medical, behavioral, and training needs at the time of adoption.
Homeward Bound is not affiliated with any breed club. Consequently, are able to rescue Golden mixes when special circumstances arise. We have the ability to rescue a Golden even though it may not be carrying AKC papers in its luggage.
Homeward Bound maintains a sanctuary and adoption center in Elverta, CA (near Sacramento). This sanctuary serves as a ‘half-way house’ for Goldens awaiting adoption, and as a permanent home for those dogs whose health issues have rendered them unlikely to be adopted. They are welcome to live out their lives at the sanctuary in security and dignity, surrounded by love.
